VIENNALAB - Established innovations in diagnostics

Monoclonal antibody therapies targeting EGFR work exceptionally well in metastatic colorectal cancer. However, certain mutations in the KRAS gene prevent success of these therapies. The KRAS StripAssay® rapidly identifies the most relevant mutations in the KRAS gene.

KRAS Mutations

  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) activates cell proliferation by binding to the EGF-Receptor (EGFR). This triggers a signal transduction pathway that includes the KRAS protein.
  • Inhibiting EGFR with monoclonal EGFR antibodies prevents activation of the relevant signal transduction pathway.
  • However, certain mutations in KRAS result in permanent activation of parts of this pathway, rendering anti-EGFR therapies ineffective.
  • Identification of KRAS mutations thus allows patient-specific treatment and prediction of tumor progression.
